Combat Basics in Tales of Seikyu

Learn the combat system, master all 6 weapon types, use mask forms effectively, and defeat every boss with proven strategies.

Understanding Combat in Seikyu

Combat in Tales of Seikyu blends action-RPG mechanics with yokai transformation. You'll fight in dungeons like the Fox Ruins and during certain story events. Mastering the system is essential for progression.

Weapon Types

There are 6 weapon categories, each with distinct playstyles:

Weapon TypeSpeedDamageRangeBest For
One-Handed SwordFastLowShortBeginners, balanced combat
Two-Handed HammerSlowHighMediumBreaking guards, raw damage
Dual BladesVery FastMediumShortAggressive DPS, combo chains
ScytheMediumMediumLongCrowd control, reach
KatanaFastHighMediumSkilled players, counter-attacks
Tools (Axe/Shovel)SlowMediumShortEmergency combat, utility
  1. Early game: Yokai's Wooden Sword (one-handed) — reliable and easy to learn
  2. Mid game: Hero's Iron Sword or Hero's Stone Hammer — significant damage jump
  3. Dungeon runs: Karma Fire Wheel (dual blades) found in Fox Ruins
  4. Late game: Dororo Black Sword or Golden Sword (katanas) for maximum power

HP and Stamina Management

  • HP depletes from enemy attacks. Reach 0 and you revive at the dungeon entrance, losing some gold.
  • Stamina is consumed by attacks and dodges. Running out leaves you vulnerable.
  • Carry healing food: Grilled Fish for quick heals, Coffee-Flavored Cake for large restores.
  • Char-Grilled Kebabs boost attack temporarily — pop one before boss fights.
  • Comfydant Lamb Stew boosts defense — use against hard-hitting bosses.

Dodge and Guard

  • Dodge (roll) gives i-frames for about 0.3 seconds. Time it against big attacks.
  • Guard reduces damage but drains stamina. Two-handed weapons guard better.
  • Learn enemy attack patterns — most telegraph with a wind-up animation.

Mask Forms in Combat

Each yokai transformation offers unique combat advantages:

# Boar Form

  • Charge attack deals massive damage and breaks enemy guards
  • Best against shielded enemies and bosses like Anji
  • Also tills farm soil — dual-purpose transformation
  • Charge has a wind-up, so time it when you have an opening

# Slime Form

  • Squeeze through gaps to escape being cornered
  • Reduced hitbox makes dodging easier
  • Counters Red Oni enemies in Fox Ruins
  • Lower damage output, so use defensively

# Tengu Form

  • Flight lets you attack from above and avoid ground AOEs
  • Excellent for exploration combined with combat
  • Aerial attacks have good range but drain stamina faster
  • Unlock after defeating Fujiki in Fox Ruins

# Yuki-onna Form

  • Ice attacks freeze enemies temporarily
  • Crowd control specialist — freeze groups then pick them off
  • Slower than other forms but incredible utility
  • Unlocked later in the story

Boss Strategies

# Anji (Fox Ruins Boss 1)

  • Weak to Boar form charge attacks
  • Dodge his slam attacks (side-roll), then charge in
  • When he guards, Boar charge breaks through
  • Keep Comfydant Lamb Stew active for defense

# Fujiki (Fox Ruins Final Boss)

  • Weak to Slime form — use it to navigate through his attack patterns
  • He has a multi-hit combo; use Slime's small hitbox to dodge between swings
  • After his combo, he pauses — switch to normal form and punish
  • Drops the Tengu Mask on defeat

Combat Skill Leveling

The Combat skill levels up from defeating enemies. Higher levels unlock:

  • New weapon recipes at the forge
  • Increased critical hit chance
  • More HP on level up
  • Access to harder dungeon floors

Fight regularly to keep your skill level progressing alongside your gear.
